What is Functional Medicine?
Functional Medicine addresses the whole person with a patient-centered approach. It studies the imbalance in a patient's physiologic and biochemical state, and identifies the possible offending agents:
Yeast Overgrowth Pathogenic bacteria, parasites, chronic viral infections Heavy metal toxicity Delayed food sensitivities Intolerance to dyes/preservatives/additives Foreign toxic chemicals (Xenobiotics)
It prescribes the supplementation of needed vitamins, nutrients, and minerals, and attempts to remove toxins that interfere with the balance.
Functional Medicine is not disease-oriented; it does not put the blame on one organ as the cause of the symptoms. For instance, based on Functional Medicine, Atopic Dermatitis can be caused by omega-3-fatty acid deficiency, yeast overgrowth, and/or delayed food sensitivity. Treating these causes can cure the eczema. Conventional doctors would instead use steroids, allergy medicines which likely result in recurrence of symptoms once the medications are stopped. Thus, why mask the problem when you can treat the cause?
